I still cannot tell for the life of me how her coat is supposed to work. The way I draw it (three flaps) doesn’t match up with how the FE12 art looks, but if there’s only one opening down the leg, it looks hard to ride a horse in… but I don’t know enough about fabric to be sure.

That's right! His leg phases STRAIGHT THROUGH HIS ARM! It's a cheat! It's technically "wrong," but it works! Moving his arm out of the way would distract from the emphasis on the extended leg! So they just committed to this "error" with confidence. And everyone accepts it!
