Nomura wanted to include him in KH1! Cloud borrowed his appearance bc Nomura aimed for a dark demon-like look.

Karaka has his Black Lotus attack. Black is the complete absence of color, representing darkness as a whole. The black lotus is a mythical flower (it doesn’t exist) that became a symbol of authority, power, death and rebellion which are all meanings quite fitting of Karaka.
