Emperor Maximilian was a tournament champion, but even better propagandist, recounting his victories against real opponents in a narrative about himself as the knight Freydal. Max personally corrected illustrations before having Durer make plates for mass-marketing #thelastknight
This beautiful 500year old suit of armour was worn in battle by emperor Maximilian I. It was commissioned by him at 18, receipt of payment to the armourer still survives and cost the modern equivalent of millions. The rise of gunpowder would soon make these useless.
