Multiply for shading, for highlights i use Overlay, Screen or Hard Light depending on the situation, for example: The highlights of this armor are done with overlay layers, but the blue light coming from the crystal uses hard light since overlay is not strong enough for that

well here's the layers I used lol, red shading is set to multiply, yellow light is set to dodge/add, and the blue ambient light is set to normal

the key is to use more saturated light at the edges, leave it thin at hard edges, and spread it out at soft edges
