It's crazy how much letting a director actually direct improves the watchability of a movie. This is a Raimi film through and through and is super enjoyable, despite suffering some pacing issues. I don't think the plot is that great, but it's a very fun watch.

@SSF1991 Ian Flynn confirmed that he didn’t write the story for Sonic Frontiers. Sonic Team did. Ian Flynn provided the script dialogues for the characters. It’s the same approach as the four Sonic Forces Prequel comic issues. He wrote the dialogues for the characters in those comics too.
