The BW-XY art style feels more natural for those flashbacks. If it were me, I would have a mixture of the open outlines for the eyes + the classic black irises and only add the classic shading during close-ups

This is why I think Gurihiru is one of the best artists in the business, despite all the styles they do, their main focus was always making the art appealing. Even if it isn't the insanely detailed work like other artists, if something looks off, it's not nearly as jarring.
