John William Waterhouse RA (6 April 1849 – 10 February 1917) was an English painter known for working first in the Academic style and for then embracing the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's style and subject matter.

Burne-Jones also painted the Circe in oil and watercolour. Zambaco modelled for her too, preparing the potions to change trespassing sailors into pigs.
Circe's story appealed to the later Pre-Raphaelites like Waterhouse, who shows her in the fullness of her powers

Burne-Jones loved the Arthurian story of Merlin & Vivien (aka Nimue).
'The Beguiling of Merlin' is currently on show in Pre-Raphaelite Sisters

I Am Half-Sick of Shadows (1915) by J.W. Waterhouse (UK, 1849–1917). Our lady is confined in her tower, viewing the world outside only through reflections in the mirror. Note the loom shuttles look like boats, a foreshadowing of her watery death.
