死の女神ヘカテがブラックドックを従属させていたことが転じ、今作では魔女が信仰するもの、または魔女のお供、使いとされることも。

東北から九州まで言い伝えがあり地域により伝承は様々。
中には人里にやってきて人々の仕事を手伝ういい山姥もいたり、金太郎の母親も山姥（になる前の女性）だったという説も。
