More likely is because current art is so "on-shape" and less "dynamic", older art shows how much experiments were done with the artstyle until it evolved to what currently is used, just like how Yuji Uekawa's style evolved when drawing sonic, that's the only example I can give

1) draw thumbnails to experiment with composition, poses, + generate ideas
2) put thumbnails to one side of the canvas + start working on the artwork
3) or i copy-paste the final thumbnail onto a new canvas and start working from there https://t.co/ioSJSkLq3f
