Because of his 2005 redesign, Prof. Gerald basically went through a horrifyingly realistic downward spiral between Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) and Sonic Adventure 2 (2001).

He lost weight, his moustache fell to shreds, all after Maria died and he got confined to prison.
