Honestly, at this point I can safely call anti-versions of the main protagonist, one of my favorite character types.
Wario's developed far beyond that of course, but he still counts.
As much as his design evolved in all the right ways, old-school Wario is still great as well. He's got this dopey charm to him.
The portrait is in the exact same style as the frames used for the Character Select Screen as well as the winning & losing portrait animations in the Mario Party Trilogy, so I think it is very likely that Mario Kart 64 was going to show Wario removing his cap.
So on a different note, the reason I even have this picture saved on my phone was because I was looking for official artwork of Wario without his Cap Before, During & After the N64 Era to doublecheck that copying SM64 Mario's hair was good for the Revamped Wario & Waluigi models.

As is well documented, Arewo Shitain made his debut in For The Frog The Bell Tolls, before making it to the Wario Land series as Mad Scienstein in 3 and by his proper name and look in Land 4.

One of the more subtle recurring themes with Wario is his proficiency with bombs.
