cheatsy: 1) put all coluring on one later. 2) copy and darken the new layer and adjust hue/saturation etc 3) erase for highlights, wary of eraser hardness, size and density for fabrics, and other surfaces etc. super quick but looks okay!

Okay, so this was a miscolouring on my part. The laces and markings on his shoes were supposed to be pure white, but they're the same colour as Nate's eye highlights.

I don't have a tutorial, but here's a layer breakdown. Short version is that I typically start dark and let the highlights do most of the work of defining the forms. I also avoid true neutral grays, even with "gray" or "white" metals.
