I need to add a point: Don't limit the Lasso tool to coloring; it's great for cellshading!

Just block your color layer/folder and start shading in a separate layer over! The tool will be using both your shading layer and the lineart layer :p

That's actually what I've done for finding colors. There's a Sub View tool that makes it easy to keep a color reference. To get it you just click Window -> Sub View then drag the window into any corner you want. Then you can click on its import file button.

(1/2) It really depends on the tool. With NESST or NEXXT, palette management is easy and i can design and experiment as i go. I can switch between sets easily and see the result directly without destructing anything.
