When I approach painting a head like this I find it helpful to think of it in terms of a sculpture, not a painting. Instead of flat paint on canvas, I imagine that I’m working with a lump of clay. Detail of 3/4 length portrait I did last year of the great artist Rob Wareing.

Another color tune based on the fact that certain fur colors were different than expected. Also had to hand over a grayscale image to illustrate fur length for the fursuit commission!
Light gray = short fur
Mid gray = medium fur
Dark gray = long fur
I think we're getting there!
