Yeah, I usually just draw them like I draw humans, same coloring style too. Though sometimes I use a more "brushy" brush to make the shadows/highlights, especially if its a very fluffy animal (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵) kinda like in this small drawing I did of Temmie:
