Posted about this in my private server a while ago, but ever wonder why Arle in Puyo Puyo 1 looks the way she does? It's cause Puyo Puyo and Madou Monogatari were so intertwined that the sprite style was borrowed from it's MSX version of the trilogy! Neat, huh?
