Multiply for shading, for highlights i use Overlay, Screen or Hard Light depending on the situation, for example: The highlights of this armor are done with overlay layers, but the blue light coming from the crystal uses hard light since overlay is not strong enough for that

This cel is composed of 4 layers, I think they are not well positionned one to each others.

The problem is that the owner also ruined all of his others cels, like this beautiful Piccolo from the Masaki Satō's sequence, whose you can see has only 1 layer 😭 (before / after)

her design has very little layers, just a petticoat, a dress, and suspenders. meanwhile with this chen costume from touhou LW, there's various layers with little details. character designs will usually look complex when put together, but very simple once you dissect the layers
