Well, I believe you're absolutely capable of making fantastic lighting (Zelda), but sometimes the light diffuses in weird ways, especially when it comes to skin (Helltaker). It could be over-use of the airbrush, using black to shade, or a combination of both.

Cream and Vanilla do not have the same fur colour. Vanilla had the same colour of fur when she was Cream’s age.
Vanilla more of a swirly warm bean in colour while Cream is light, sunny and well, a nice cream shade, more saturated
