King Acorn was intended to be a fox, but was mistakenly given squirrel-like colors. Ben stated he thought her mother most likely would've been a squirrel.

Did you know the reason why many of the characters in Archie Sonic Issue 0 had the wrong colors/ designs was due to a mixup of the SatAM model sheets? The pilot designs had actually been finalized long before Issue 0 started production. This was fixed in the following issue.
