And generally they are more like caricature and they are not made to be cute (and cuteness alone is not enough to make one a waifu).
But at the same time, it deviates from the western style through its color work. Comics uses ink to create dimension to its characters. And yes, the early chapters of POTN also does that a bit but the "3D" effect primarily comes from BD's color shading/ lighting.
"This style overlaps with the more ""western"" style of comics". What I mean by that is it leans more towards the 'realistic' anatomy of character design, rather than the less-detailed style, more common in mangas or other webtoons.

Was looking into some of the early VHS release of Sailor Moon for western territories. Was quite surprised to see the first few released by DiC had artwork that was drawn by, what I assume are western artists rather than just reusing the official Japanese art like later ones did.

I know that Usami/Monomi isn’t popular, especially for Danganronpa fans. But as someone who was a pre-western release fan of SDR2, I got attached to the Japanese voices quite quickly. And they hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for your work Miss Takako Sasuga. 🙏
