so really rather than just blending a bunch of colors with one brush you're more layering them on whatever you're using as a flat base, blending them with the base, and using blended parts to colorpick midtones

felt nostalgic for corel painter so I tried the free trial... the essentials version has pretty much everything EXCEPPPTTT the "pickup underlying layers" blending function which is the thing I miss most about painter. but the full version is $400. so. ehuhehu

Ohh? I never use the spray tool in Clip studio, I use a different brush. That brush is very versatile and allows soft edges as well as hard edges and blending. You can see the difference in both pictures, they were painted with the same brush
