White Rock had promoted its use as a good "alkaline" mixer to add to alcohol to make the beverages less sweet. In the 1930s during Prohibition, White Rock encouraged people to add its water to non-alcoholic beverages, such as grape or orange juice.

The tiger advertising mascot for Norwegian Esso Oil made his US debut in the end of the World War II. "Put a tiger in your tank" was a slogan created in 1959 by Emery Smith, a young Chicago copywriter.
