Mary siempre comienza con  acuarela y tinta china, luego cubre sus obras con medios encáusticos (ceras calientes), a veces en capas, como pan de oro y serigrafía entre las capas de cera. El resultado de esta técnica mixta apaga los colores un poco añadiendo ese aura de ensueño.
