Ikuhara solo se decidió a mostrar abiertamente que Juri era lesbiana cuando terminó el borrador inicial, donde su sexualidad quedaba más ambigua.
Al final optó por dejar claro que sí, estaba enamorada de una mujer y que su historia es la de un amor no correspondido.
Igual que Sailor Uranus, Utena viste de hombre…solo que sin llegar al extremo de ser confundida con uno (su uniforme es "masculino" pero no viste como Juri). Utena quiere ser un príncipe, no se siente cómoda en el rol femenino pero siempre recuerda a todos que es una mujer.
Utena parece muy inspirada por la exitosa compañía Takarazuka Revue, fundada en 1913, compuesta solo por mujeres. Los papeles masculinos resuenan mucho con Utena y Juri, mientras que los femeninos son exageradamente delicados y pasivos, como Anthy.
