The Great Stink of 1858 in London occurred when hot weather exacerbated the smell of untreated human waste and industrial effluent that was present on the banks of The Thames River. Between 1830-1860, c. 40,000 people died from cholera that was associated with river pollution.

In 1858 he painted Wellington & Blücher & followed that with the Death of Nelson (1859-64). Not only could he sell the paintings but they also provided him with prints which were a lucrative addition at the time.
