A double ridge helmet dated around 6thC BC, excavated from a burial in Austria. This Hallstatt type helmet was worn mainly by Celts and Etruscans and had two small hooks front and back to hold a crest between the ridges. Now in the natural history museum, Vienna.
Spotted some crocuses in the wild so so here’s some lovely illustrations! Saffron (from crocus sativus) historically used to treat ailments such as gout & asthma, and believed to be an aphrodisiac. This 19thc medical #botany text also claims it brings “ecstatic drunkenness”
Found this 19thC tile while walking near Long Melford. Medieval architecture appealed to the Victorians who longed for pre-industrial England. Dogs in the Middle Ages herded, hunted & protected. A 9thC prayer says: 'God preserve us from the Northmen & their terrible dogs.'
19thc immediacy. Against the light background, the brilliancy of van Dyck's head studies is even more apparent.

Was #Dickens portrayal of #olderadults in his writings a reflection of 19thC attitudes to ageing or was he gerontophobic? I am writing on this subject.

Stylish gentleman: Esp. like the six-pointed stars repeated on the buttons of both waistcoat & coat - plus extra love for that carnelian pinkie ring. "Portrait of an English Architect" unsigned, 18thc English School @JohnMoranInc #fashionhistory
One of my fav old blogs. The wildly fanciful "Puritian maidens" painted in the 19thc by George Henry Boughton - and they still turn up around Thanksgiving as examples of 17thc Massachusetts "Pilgrims." https://t.co/6iErITxPZr
