So it seems like it works better with more "pure" colors. My method is usually just using a darker shade of the color I'm shading with (first 2 are Darken, next 2 are Multiply)

5) my big break through re: colors... i'm not good at picking colors manually, but i DO know what i want the final feeling to be. then i remembered i have layer modes to achieve that. so, updated mock colors! lots of multiply and some glow layers

draw your outlines with a dark red, shade it on the same layer, set that same layer to multiply and add your base colors below it. add your shadings to it, dont think too hard on the placements

Today progress: hmmm 2nd layer of shading on clothes and tail, re-did lines on hair and used multiply over base color layer for hair.
(I have 5 more multiply layers I have to go through) OOF.
