The first one is a low scale picture, a fad from a while ago. The lines are blurred.
I like to draw clearly and add embroidery-like decorations, as in the second picture.
I think this difference of preference in setting gives birth to the painting style in AI pictures.

Inkling is only representing splatoon 1. I don't think it'd be hard to add the brella for their shield, or even a dualie dodge for their rolls. Also why isn't their duck and crawl just the squid form laying on the ground, it's just a boring crawl like zss

I usually just choose whatever colors from the wheel I like, or ones that go with the character I'm drawing, usually always complimentary. With shading, I always think about what color I want to make my light source, and just add that color as I go along!
