I vaguely remember someone digging in datamine and Fray had dark skin? and I tried playing with it in character creator and he turned out really cool!!!

not that you can't be vague in color -- though the methods are quite different. my version of this lately has been to embrace the sloppiness of painting on a single layer and resisting the temptation to use small brushes, so that fine details get dilated or disappear completely:
