"Token" characters are called so because they're defined by their race rather than anything actually interesting about the character themselves. Street Fighter characters avoid being "tokens" because they fulfill archetypes outside of race/nationality. That's crucial!
Street Fighter characters rise above being just stereotypes because they're actually cool. They work as a fun, cool characters first and foremost. That's really humanizing in a way that I think a lot of people who want to make diverse casts sometimes forget.
