I painted this after being caught by the deep hues of the harbour waters in the late evening. It shows that I was interested in Rothko at the time ! A painter in whoms work I find it impossible not to see some horizons.

A study I made thinking about the morning light on the harbour here in Amble. I deliberately, slightly perversely, wanted to pare the scene down and focus on the light itself and the harsh structure of the quayside wall.

grappling irons to ‘creep’ the ocean floor catch the rope containing the illegal cargo. Such cargo could include genever (gin) & tobacco. The sailer on the French boat is most upset & shakes his fists as he realises that the harbour patrol is just about to apprehend them.
