Today we lost Syd Mead, an artist well-known for his work on Aliens, Tron, and Blade Runner. An icon for his detailed work, Mead was part of a trinity of artists who stoked my imagination as a child (Mead, McQuarrie & Frazetta).

Filmmakers and artist saw his brilliance and he was brought in to work on Star Trek The Motion Picture. And from there he collaborated and with many filmmakers. The first image here is 1960’s Syd Mead, the 2nd Is 1980’s Empire Strikes Back
Syd Mead might singlehandedly be responsible for my obsession w/ neofuturistic art & cyberpunk. Besides what he’s typically known for (Bladerunner, Aliens, Tron, etc), he was also a consultant & designer for many other futuristic technothrillers, like my fave—STRANGE DAYS. RIP.
RIP Syd Mead. Was literally just flipping thru one of his books today that I havent picked up in months and then a friend told me he just died. I don’t know what that means but I do know I’ll always go to his work for inspiration. His visions shaped so much of sci-fi and futurism
Syd Mead has been a pillar of my creative inspiration since the first time I laid eyes on this piece, and in turn finally *saw* his work. May he rest in peace, and may we carry his work forward with us.
Syd Mead passed away today at the age of 86, a concept artist who worked on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Tron, Blade Runner, Aliens, and many more.
IIRC he never worked on Mass Effect, but the ME games are clearly influenced by his work.
Just the other day, I was tweeting about how he was one of the best things about Blade Runner, and now he's gone.
Syd Mead was a dude who drew a lot of the future we saw in movies, but he was also just a grown up kid who drew a lot of cool cars.
