i used to draw only the outlines as well, but i have recently learned a new way to do it, basically you create a black layer, lower the opacity and draw the scales using the eraser, although it does take a really long time, its absolutely worth it

For the head, I'd emphasize the brutish forehead, loosening up the dog ears, and shading the tongue (sunlight on the edge but also shadow from the mouth), and the spit doesn't need the black outlines because it make the spit look to thick.

These are some of the best examples of icons I drew. I got the use of limited colors and thicc outlines, and I kinda got the exaggerated expressions. I think using less space is something I should try doing because these icons take up the whole 150x150 boundaries.
