Wrinkling up the nose when they're very upset and crying works as well, makes it look like they're having a lot of emotion. So when in doubt, add wrinkles

Emphasize on the teeth and eyebrows and wrinkles, lots of wrinkles especially on animals
For very upset theres a lot of ways to do it. Having the eyes big and a wide open mouth can potray disbelief in it as well
