Claremont steers away from this a bit by using Storm as his vantage point character (with all the agency she possesses), rather than a hypermasculine figure such as Conan, but the visual trappings of the S&S sexual fantasy are still very much in play throughout the issues. 7/8

Claremont’s text-heavy pages are the stuff of comics legend, which makes the contribution of letterer Tom Orzechowski that much more pivotal to the success of the franchise and series. 1/6

Havok leaves the X-Men immediately upon Claremont’s arrival on the book. Issues later, we discover that he’s found his bliss as a graduate student, living in the Arizona desert with the love of his life, Lorna Dane (aka Polaris). 2/7

And those Classic X-men insets, along with Steve Lightle are huge highlights of my exposure to early Claremont X-men. This Moira, my god!

Moonstar was a rare and important character in comics history who had been sorely neglected by post-Claremont writers. Karma was a complex character with a very dark back-story that Claremont himself had sort of written away in the pages of New Mutants. 5/6

Though this dynamic was novel for comics, it is also worth noting the sheer degree of difficulty that Claremont would have faced here: building platonic friendships that are as engrossing and captivating as intense romantic passions is no easy task. 4/6

A chapter on how Moira establishes the “Claremont Woman” paradigm (infamous in the Marvel bullpen) and how Jean Grey’s character was retconned through the Phoenix to invest her with rare narrative agency for a female character in comics of the time; 4/13

This past week I submitted my completed manuscript to the publisher for a book on Claremont’s subversive portrayal of gender roles in X-Men comics. In honour of that, I thought it might be good to share what’s in it for anyone who might be curious. 1/13

the story where Storm and Emma Frost switch bodies and Storm just konks Kitty out and tries to steal her back in a getaway car is so wild and fun and pure claremont in uhhh every sense

Claremont validates Storm’s leadership of the team in a number of ways that often involve challenges to hypermasculine figures, but when he wants to establish that Storm is more than just Cyclops’ capable stand-in for leadership, he has them duel for it. 2/6

yeah Claremont does one classic megalomaniacal magneto story in the volcano with Byrne just to show he can and then in with Cockrum he’s like “ok but watch this”

bc it’s Claremont this turn to antihero also involves someone (Storm) going “oh no he’s hot” https://t.co/upAxh4n2jw

Whilst Colleen did experience a breakout success in the 00s alongside Misty, she never quite broke free FROM Misty. Her only recent appearances have really been in dedicated Colleen stories, which are sometimes worth reading! Claremont did his best to put her in the X-Men though.

Eu podia jurar que quem deu o ideia do Wolverine weeaboo tinha sido o Frank Miller (pq né), mas cinco anos antes da minissérie dos dois, o Claremont já tava dando pitaco da otaquice secreta do carcaju

I was iffy on the Pete Wisdom romance. Wasn’t a big fan of her college series either (though that was written by Claremont!)

Claremont is famous for writing some epic superhero death scenes, but the death of Destiny deserves to be in the same conversation as the likes of Jean Grey and Thunderbird. It’s not foregrounded to the same extent, but its execution is tremendous. 10/10
