C'est après avoir remplacé un modèle pour sa femme, Gerda Wegener, que Lili Elbe commence à se genrer au féminin. Elle est l'une des premières personnes à transitionner en bénéficiant d'une chirurgie de réassignation sexuelle, dont elle mourra en 1931.
