January 29, 1888: English landscape painter Edward Lear dies.

Lear is better known as a writer of "nonsense verse", but his skill as an artist is impressive.

During his career, he worked for the and made drawings of birds for the ornithologist John Gould. 🎨

This is all about beaks and feet!.
These wood engravings and color lithographs are based on drawings and paintings by Ernest Thompson Seton found in our 1907 edition of 'Bird-Life, A Guide to the Study of our Common Birds,' by American ornithologist Frank M. Chapman

The two figures of a Woodchat featured in Yarrell’s (1845) History of British Birds. Ornithologists have been, are and will continue to be funny souls! What other examples historical are there!? I can name a few…

Bizarrely Bond was actually named after an American ornithologist that Fleming met on holiday and visually he's based on American musician Hoagy Carmichael.

The Dickcissel (Spiza americana) is mainly a bird of the American Midwest. Max has seen and heard them in his rambles around the Midwest, but never seen them here in Wisconsin. This chromolithographic plate is from a painting by the noted American ornithologist Robert Ridgway.
