Today is the 50th anniversary of episode 1 of The Silurians, first broadcast on 31 January 1970. If you're giving the story a commemorative rewatch, the latest #theblackarchive is the companion you need.

My illustrations have been published along side a great article by biologist Mackenzie Kwak for @RTW_Aus. Peer back in time to the Silurian period 420 million years ago when some of the first land plants emerged.

3 sarcopterygian fish from the Silurian. From the top: Guiyu oneiros, Megamastax, and Psarolepis. 2/3 of these were pretty big predators of the Silurian seas, with Guiyu reaching about 13in while Megamastax is estimated at around 1m (3.28ft) #sundayfishsketch #paleoart
Some Silurian agnathans for #sundayfishsketch I did earlier this year. From top to bottom: Birkenia, Pharyngolepis, Lasanius & Jamoytius.
Progress made on my #acrylicpainting series Deep Time Dramas! Working to combine #paleoart and expression. Plenty more to go on these (including actually adding animals ofc)
1. The Devonian - love, connectivity
2. The Ordovician/Silurian Extinction - indecision, separation
Spending this #FossilFriday working on the last few pages of text for LTTAII, including the last page describing a scene of fossil animals. This honour goes to a Silurian marine scene that which I painted for @LukeHauser's thesis. Agnathans and early gnathostomes FTW! #paleoart
Pterygotus was a gigantic arthropod that could grow to 2.3 metres long! They lived during the early Silurian-Devonian period. They had a pair of large eyes & a smaller pair in the centre of their head.

Acutiramus is an extinct sea scorpion that emerged in the Late Silurian. These gigantic arthropods reached 2 metres in length & had pincers that were 5 centimetres long!
