#Tolkien’s imagination was shaped by the #Kalevala. His 1st prose tale (interspersed with poetry) was a retelling of the story of Kullervo (published posthumously, ed. by V. Flieger), a figure who later inspired Túrin Turambar (art by @AlanLee11225760) @TolkienSociety
In Finnish folklore, a hiisi is a forest spirit who is a danger to travellers.
He is said to own a hundred-horned elk.
Hiisi are so well known, they are used instead of goblins in the Finnish translations of Tolkien’s stories!

It’s wild there’s a million different editions of the hobbit when clearly the one with Tolkien’s own illustrations is the best

In #Tolkien’s mythology Yavanna is the Giver of Fruits. She is robed in green and loves “all things that grow in the earth”. There are clear resonances with Demeter from classical myth, but who is who? 👇

My illustrations inspired by #Tolkien’s Perry-the-Winkle. The pictures do have a sequence and I will post the fifth (the last one) in the next post. #illustration #drawing

Here’s an invented #festival: “Tarnin Austa or the Gates of Summer” celebrated in Gondolin (in #Tolkien’s Arda) to mark the beginning of summer. That’s the moment that Melko(r) chooses to attack Gondolin.
