The proto-surrealist - Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901). Swiss Symbolist painter. Böcklin influenced Giorgio de Chirico, who said "Each of Böcklin's works is a shock". He also influenced other Surrealist painters like Max Ernst and Salvador Dalí.

I wasn’t familiar with Böcklin so I looked him up. I see what you mean.

203: Echoes of the Past! Really great episode, really fun new location. The wide shot of King's island is obviously a ref to Böcklin's "Isle of the Dead" painting. I've really loved coming up with all of the in-world art styles like the murals here.

Giorgio de Chirico was an Italian artist and writer born in Greece. In the years before World War I, he founded the scuola metafisica art movement, which profoundly influenced the surrealists. His early style was influenced by Arnold Böcklin, classically trained rule breaker.

Solo ho amica la notte.
Sempre potrò trascorrere con essa
d’attimo in attimo, non ore vane;
ma tempo cui il mio palpito trasmetto
come m’aggrada, senza mai distrarmene.
(Giuseppe Ungaretti)

Böcklin was back in Munich by 1872. Self-Portrait (1872), Nymph on Pan’s Shoulders (1874), Vestalin (1874) & Idyll (1875). Nowadays we see the escapism of his work & it’s lack of imagination, but at the time such work was part of popular culture & yearning.

Originating in Olde English folklore and later all over Europe & north America, a 'Will-o'-the-Wisp' is an atmospheric ghost-like light seen by travelers at night, especially over bogs, swamps or marshes.
