I took these darkened pictures of Boatswain’s Monument shortly before nightfall while visiting Newstead Abbey in October 2018. The painting is an actual life-size portrait of Boatswain by Clifton Tomson (1775-1828). Here are others of Byron & Boatswain by E.B. Pigot (1783-1866).

The defenders had placed stakes in the channels, allowing them to range in all of their guns. Their fire was incredibly accurate, raking the Union gunboats and forcing the USS Clifton and Sachem to surrender. Over 350 casualties were suffered, against none for the defenders.

This 1792 painting by JMW Turner is an evocative and highly romanticised depiction of the Avon Gorge. The building atop the gorge is the 1766 built Clifton Observatory. At this time it was a former windmill which was damaged in a storm.

Happy 40th Birthday
Pac-Man was the first arcade game I actually remember playing, a cabaret version in Cliftonville Bowling Alley, probably around 1981. Pac-Man fever was rife, and the adults kept hogging the damn thing, but I got a go in the end.
