Dave Cockrum is up for election to the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame this year and, given our area of focus (by which I mean ‘our bias’) I wanted to make a case for his selection amidst a highly competitive pool of nominees. 1/5

Here's something that I believe has never happened before! Marvel just released this issue of "Marvel Snapshots: Captain Marvel using an unpublished Ms.Marvel cover by the late Dave Cockrum & me, originally done way back in 1978. I was blown away!

The team had seen departures along the way, including Angel in the second Cockrum era, and Rachel in a recent issue, but to have two of the longest-tenured members as well as a beloved viewpoint character go out at the same time was genuinely shocking to readers. 2/6

A recoloring of Iron Fist cover art by Dave Cockrum & Al Milgrom. This comes from the back cover of The Fury of Iron Fist Complete Collection TPB. Issue 14, the 1st appearance of Sabretooth, has 1 of the best covers in the series & a true classic masterpiece.👊

yeah Claremont does one classic megalomaniacal magneto story in the volcano with Byrne just to show he can and then in with Cockrum he’s like “ok but watch this”

bc it’s Claremont this turn to antihero also involves someone (Storm) going “oh no he’s hot” https://t.co/upAxh4n2jw

(That Cockrum masterpiece in my opinion might... be the best “action” cover in X-history?)

Lastly in X-Men Nightcrawler discovering his new shadow powers (some images from You could really see the love that Cockrum had for Nightcrawler & how he always found excuses to give him cool stuff to do (can we ignore the leprechauns that showed up in this issue?)

Cockrum also gave Cyclops a new, more rounded visor. You can see the older version (drawn here by Neal Adams) and then Cockrum drawing both versions on the same page.

Lee’s designs convey both the unity of the alien culture they come from, as well as the unique individuality of the characters in play. At the same time, Lee is incorporating pre-existing elements of Dave Cockrum and John Byrne’s Shi’ar designs. 6/7

1. The Brood Saga (Uncanny 154-167) This is the first really BIG long X-Men arc, pure Bronze Age sci-fi melodrama. Cockrum is a genius and he draws the hell out of these comics. I can't stress enough how underrated this whole story is.

Chris Claremont in 1985: we should push X-Men into darker and more overtly political territory. All the X-Men are exhausted and traumatized and desperately trying to make things work.

Cyclops!

John Byrne, Jack Kirby, Werner Roth, Dave Cockrum!

Can you think of the X-Men without thinking of Cyclops? Is he more essential to the team than Professor X, Wolverine, or Storm? Is he the true key X-Man?
