No it seems they're going straight off the style guide for sonic himself, down to the colors, maybe also using the current classic model as reference. The rest of the art is 100% Sakai's style in all it's coolness but he was really leaning into the reference for sonic.

I went with a cooler-bluer purple than a redder purple to convey a distant coolness. It contrasts to the purple often use with Rouge too, which has pink undertones.
