I enjoyed Coates’ Black Panther run, it ended on a high for me.

But Ridley’s is really not to my liking. Why the deconstructionist take? Why all the internecine fighting? The political commentary feels very thin and so does the character work.

At least the covers are pretty.

FSS gets a film that's not v loyal to the manga but is still gorgeous. Patlabor's best iteration: a TV action-sitcom format. And ofc Gundam 0080: part fandom deconstruction, part grim war story, beautifully animated. Made me cry.

Two unbaked narrative threads aside, this was a good deconstruction of the souls-like genre. Production is absolutely top notch, and the gameplay is pretty good. Exploration balancing still needed a bit more tightening.

Now, since DQ is the precursor formula from which nearly all later JRPGs derive, deconstructions of the game are not uncommon. Just about every modern isekai anime, manga or light novel that isn’t just cribbing from MMOs or otome games is riffing on the DQ1 formula.

We can thus read Psylocke as a deconstruction of the artificially effeminate superheroine archetype or we can simply read her as a character who grew and changed over the years and adopted different costumes to reflect that. I prefer the former. 8/8

I may be bias, since I think Marvel’s deconstruction of was one of the 1st steps down the Path away from true Heroes. But these ‘milking the cow for all it’s worth’ covers of MM and heroes just look aesthetically wrong to me.
