Dimitri, an ancestor of Knuckles, turned into Enerjak after absorbing 11 chaos emeralds. Knuckles became him after the Master Emerald was corrupted. Two other echidnas used the name before them.

Two of these peoples; the kukkos and the rogues are thieves after all, the former having attempted to obtain the emeralds. And the echidnas maintained control over the gems. So it's possible that the two factions could have been enemies at some point.
