For this over-marbled pattern I wanted to capture the feeling of sunlight striking the ocean’s surface, the golden beams reaching down to deep sea, where the Nautilus drifts from shadow to shadow, pausing briefly to soak in some rays.

Paul Coker Jr., who did the character designs for the 1969 Rankin-Bass “Frosty the Snowman”, is also a frequent contributor to MAD. His most famous feature is “Horrifying Cliches”, depicting overused phrases made literal through comically grotesque monsters.
