Brian and Wendy Froud, need I say more???
13. Alan Lee & Brian Froud
i'm putting them together because Faeries (1978) was my introduction to fantasy art & shaped EVERYTHING about my interests/aesthetics as a child
Alan Lee - Like Brian Froud, I was introduced to Alan Lee's work very young (both in the book Faeries, which is stunning). I can't even begin to describe how much I love his work 😫 His pencil work, his colouring, the way he draws faces - all of it is perfect.
Brian Froud - I was introduced to his art as a kid and I would spend hours pouring over his work, wondering how one can even make work so deep and detailed (and even now I still kinda wonder lol)
It is prudent to tickle a newborn's nose with pepper as soon as possible—for babies aren't safe from the fairies until after their first sneeze.

That thread goes on to say "granted these stereotypes about goblins all predate her writing" but... they really don't. As someone pretty well pickled in fantasy juice over my life, goblins are always either tiny green guys with big ears who stab you, or Brian Froud muppets.
trollmaidens are trolls born with a rare illness that decreases their lifespan and runts their size. other trolls treasure them dearly in their short time here, and knights often mistake them for kidnapped princesses. (Source: The Book of Trolls by B & W Froud)
@DarkFilly Here's a selection of Froud's books. His style is more in-line with what the final product for Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, so I assume he and Godbey were both significant contributors to the art direction.
@WilliamScurry @MovieKessler Also, I can never get over how much he looks like a Brian Froud faerie illustration
@JeyBarnes here, have a big fancy Cabral dragon & a Froud i'd never seen before
