The birds in love are flapping in the pool. Two colorful feathers land on her hand, turning into vivid eardrops.

“Are you fond of dancing, child? My Carellen’s a lovely dancer. She sings beautifully as well. What do you like to do?”

She scuffed a toe amongst the rushes. “Needlework.”

“Very restful, isn’t it?”

“Well,” said Arya, “not the way I do it.”

These bulletins were published by the Needlework Development Scheme. Established in 1934, operating until 1961, the scheme was a partnership between educational establishments and industry. Its core aims were to raise the design standards in Britain and encourage more embroidery

The MC of my first two books is Penelope. She's a gutsy princess who doesn't let the "rules" of royal life dictate her path. She'd much rather learn magic than pratice her --- still competent --- needlework.

You're quite right about the needlework/memorial pictures. Perhaps the push for white mourning came as the hard-core evangelical "Prepare to meet thy God at any any moment!" softened c. 1830s onward? Strangely, both conventional Christians and Spiritualists advocated for white.

Fantastic! Reminds me of this Charles II needlework depiction of the Judgement of Solomon. Made with coloured silks & silver & gilt metal threads, with purl-work/moss-work, it shows just how vibrant biblical art was in post-Reformation Britain. This beautiful piece is by Inuk artist Janet Nungnik. She uses embroidery and appliqué (needlework) to create intricate wallhangings which tell the story of her life and people.
