Spears' book is a fascinating look at traveling salesman culture, the Mad Men of their time, before phones & TV & radio. Most salesmen sold to businesses (wholesale), not house-to-house. They were stereotyped as being prostitute-hiring, boozing creeps and...some were I'm sure?
