Tony Attwood, a psychologist, writes, "social skills in children with autism includes self-isolation or rigid social approaches, while in AS there can be a motivation to socialise but this is achieved in a highly eccentric, one-sided, verbose & insensitive manner."

However, only about 25% of people with a learning disABILITY are known to support services. This, for me, is worrying.

I thought when I first started this hour that those with a disABILITY or who work or care for someone with additional needs would join in. They have! But I've also been pleasantly surprised about who else has joined in.

There had already been 14 attempts to push civil rights legislation for the disABLED community through Parliament between the early 1980s and mid-1990s. All had failed. I find this astonishing.

Many autistic people have sensory issues. This can affect one or more of the senses and they can be either over-developed (hypersensitive) or under-developed (hyposensitive). Both can have an impact on how people experience different environments.

Ensure disABILITY awareness is an integral part of your customer services training for all personnel. Everyone needs to be on board and support selling to the purple pound!

If possible, sign up to the Government’s Disability Confident accreditation scheme. This requires you too make a commitment to the recruitment & retention of employees with a disABILITY.

Scoliosis is another rare disease. A person's spine has a sideways curve. usually "S"- or "C"-shaped. In some, the degree of curve is stable, while in others, it increases over time.
